Wat het nu betekent om een assistentiehond te hebben, zowel in positieve als negatieve zin. Mijn eerste doel was om te gaan bloggen, maar ik heb al snel moeten toegeven dat ik dat fysiek niet kon volhouden. Wat ik wel echter heel goed kan is foto’s met korte verhaaltjes plaatsen! WHEELCHAIR? NO EXCUSES
Only options to pack for a holiday to your hearts desire 😂 Or to your handicap & dogs desire in my case… a place for Evi to sleep, charger for my wheelchair, lots of braces, medication & aids like my crutches and bright pink gripper.
And yes you can pretty much guess my main colour palette by now: pink & purple all the way.
Besides all of this I have a hand luggage suitcase for Evi and a weekend bag on wheels for my own clothes (you know; the normal stuff).
But now on to the dilemma of the day: I have a stapler, I need the stapler, I found the staples
But for the life of me cannot find my stapler…
Taxi arrives at 08.32 tomorrow morning (or 10am if the last trip is anything to go by 🤨). Should arrive at port around 11:15. And since Valys is about as trustworthy as a teenager with a tantrum I’d rather sit at port drinking coffee for a few hours then arrive late for boarding… 🛳️

CRUISE KICKOFF TIME!
Here we really go: time to go on a cruise! Evi, I and my mother are going on a Norway cruise this Saturday. Well be leaving from Rotterdam and will be visiting Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger and Skjolden. In the latter we will be going on a bus trip to see Jotunheimen national park.
We’re all set to have a beautiful accessible cabin and will be experiencing everything the MsRotterdam with @hollandamericaline has to offer. And many of you are curious so what better place to let everyone know what we’re doing and when?
Evi has her life saving vest on, but when we sink in one of the Fjords - as my brother stated - we’ll probably be safe just standing on the topdeck, as the ship is high enough to not even fully sink 😂

IT’S A POODLE IN GERMAN SHEPHERD SKIN!
Ok… so it took me 6 years of trying to save her coat to get to this point of well fuck it completely… started with clipping her butt, then pieces of her tail, then shortening her back and on and on and on… all the while thinking about what I’ve been taught: NEVER SHAVE A DOUBLE COATED DOG - and all that comes with that, it won’t grow back, you can never stop shaving, oh gawd she can now not regulate her temperature, it’s torture and on and on and on
But what if that dog is miserable? And the owner as well, itching, broken skin, not being able to cool down because the double coat lost all its meaning with medication, castration, allergies etc? And grooming became torture - she’d scream to hell and back when being brushed, even after washing, conditioner, anti tangling etcetera.
I’m new to this bad of a coat in dogs but I’ve seen it in horses and her skin I can only best compare to a horse with cpl, it’s uneven, there are welts, itchy spots, spots with lots of loose skin and during shaving even spots I almost couldn’t get trough. And a horse with CPL? You wouldn’t think twice about shaving that down, even if the horse had feathers like a maybelline model.
So if I can improve quality of life meaning she has to look like a poodle? Then I’ll do it. And every time I go shorter all I can think of is “why didn’t I let go sooner”. And so I did this time, 2mm… but I found cysts, grass awns already embedding, crusty parts, welts and a tick… and I still feel mad at myself. I check them both over Every. Single. Day. Yet her coat was so compacted I did not feel them.
So yes, I agree: this does look fucking horrible compared to the wonderful long haired coat she once had. But that coat brought nothing but pain, itching and issues so fuck that coat.
And now you know why you’ll see a butt naked Faye on photos: she’s happier running around like this.
And so am I, the coming week I’ll be laughing my ass off on this new look 😂

UNHINGED TRAVEL TIPS: ASSISTANCE DOG EDITION
Bring it on! What’s your most unhinged travel tip? The one thing you do that might be borderline weird but you feel is best for you and your pup. Not talking about ‘make copies of documents’ or ‘ make sure you have poop bags and a second leash’ we all know that…. No I’m talking ‘I shaved a heart on my long haired German shepherd’s ass and colour it every single day with eyeshadow so people 1. Don’t stare at her but at her butt ánd 2. She’s immediately recognisable if something happens’ - kind of unhinged.
We’re preparing for our cruise and we’re going to make it happen - I’m in doubt wether I order glitter eyeshadow and fill it in with glitter. On the photo it’s hot pink but that makes it look like a flesh wound so we’re going purple (wheelchair), orange (HAL orange party) and maybe even the Norwegian flag for shore days 🇳🇴

I TIRED, I SLEEP
Visited hoomans brother last week, hooman brother has garden… it fuuuuuulll of blackberries 🤤🤤 after the nomnoms, a long journey by car and waiting for hooman & brother because they went for a shop the sleeps was strong.
Faye will be having a long sleepover at my brothers home when Evi and I will be going on a cruise with my mother (yes I’m fucking exited out of my mind ánd nervous all at the same time) and when I will be having another surgery later this year. My brother is the place to be for my dogs; he’s taken care of them for years and if anyone is to be trusted to give medication at the right time, check in on her, keeping her busy and keeping her safe with all her special quirks; it’s him. I know I don’t have to worry about her well-being when she’s there, because he’s there for her 100% and that’s the only way for me to relax while being hundreds of km’s away on a ship 🫣
And yes, of course my SO could do it, or friends or even a kennel. But they all also have other engagements like work and dogs with their own special needs. If needed be, we could. But why when my in house dog specialist has proven himself for over 10 years and will be there for her full time ❤️ (yes I do count myself lucky)

OOPS - I DID IT AGAIN
I’ve posted about the fight with Faye’s coat before. But now, without the fluoxetine the automutilating returned, and with this, her castrated fur, allergies and everything combined her coat was felting all over. Do nothing and it would give wounds and issues. But when your dog starts yelping and fleeing into the garden or her kennel the moment you grab the comb because you can’t let it slide? That’s the moment I was done with jt. No more just the pants, no more ‘oh dear but she’ll loose the cooling ability of her natural coat’ no she won’t; because her natural coat turned into a hot felted mass that no longer serves any purpose at all. I guess I still kind of felt obligated to justify myself because the main opinion is to never ever shave a dog with a coat like Faye’s. And if at all possible I’d never do it, like I’d never shave Evi.
But Faye? I was done with the torture to keep as much natural coat as possible. So I put away the comb dramatically and grabbed the hair clippers, before I could even say the command she was standing on the table. How loud can a dog shout out her wishes behaving like that?
So, I’ve done horses, never a dog so there’s still much to learn on length, shapes, figures and couldn’t find my thinning scissors to make the edges less blunt. But for a first time hackjob try I’m happy with how it turned out, including the little diva heart ❤️
And yes, Faye is noticeably happier like this, no longer panting like an imbecile, running around happy, not scratching or biting herself every 5 minutes. She still hurts herself; that’s a story for another time, but this short coat is remarkably better.
I don’t know where it will end only that I’ll never ever shave those fluffy ears, the rest? We can stand to loose that in light of her comfort.
And yes, the glitter pink unicorn girl inside of me does really like a dog with a heart shape on her ass 😂 I might even dye it pink….

And yet I always fall for the same trap: mini versions of things. And this time it were two little goats Kinderboerderij Kokiezier Doetinchem lured me in with and I loved it; so now I’m sharing it 😂
Sharing it while back at home watching Evi & Faye play it out in the garden sitting in the sun with my dinner, I say it a lot; life is good ❤️

SOCK SOCK SOCK SOCK SOCK
Okay; so totally unflattering video for my sack-of-potatoes body, but who cares when it shows Faye doing a stellar job?Sometimes my compression socks need to go, and sometimes I really don’t want to call for an ADL’er to help me. One of those sometimes was today, I was sitting comfortably and felt nothing for getting up, calling, waiting etc and meanwhile my compression socks were full itchy hairs (I just dematted Evi’s back-end).
And there comes the Faye to save the day, and like I said to friends:I often wonder if I’ll ever find a dog again that’s able to pull off class 2, hip height, tightly fitting compression socks with that much force without ever so much as making a nick. €300 per pair and she never once damaged one with her teeth. There are holes in them by the way, because of nails of other people taking them off or putting them on; or heck I even did one in with my silver splints once. You do need to be careful and one sharp dog tooth can do serious damage.
And if you look at the video you probably get why, to me, this is so special. She needs a lot of force to get them off, she’s throwing in all 33kg’s of dog, the same reason I have trouble taking them off myself. So, flattering position or not; I did want to share wit the world that assistance dogs can do amazing things.

Still waiting for the vet to call with the full story workup, which does get a bit harder every day; I want to know the story, the options and… the time we have left, will it be months or can we still count on years if we give it our full…. We’re all a bit nervous here.
